विश्व खाद्य कार्यक्रम (डब्ल्यूएफपी) के प्रमुख ने कहा है कि संयुक्त राष्ट्र एजेंसी को मिले नोबेल शांति पुरस्कार ने एजेंसी को यह सामर्थ्य दिया है कि वह विश्व भर के नेताओं को इस बात के लिए आगाह कर सके कि अगला वर्ष इस वर्ष की तुलना में और खराब होगा और अगर अरबों डॉलर की सहायता नहीं मिली तो 2021 में भुखमरी के मामले बेतहाशा बढ़ जाएंगे

डब्ल्यूएफपी के प्रमुख डेविड बेस्ले ने एक साक्षात्कार में कहा कि नार्वे की नोबेल समिति उन कार्यों को देख रही थी जो एजेंसी संघर्ष में, आपदा में और शरणार्थी शिविरों में प्रतिदिन करती है. लाखों भूखे लोगों को भोजन मुहैया करवाने के लिए अपने कर्मचारियों की जिंदगी को जोखिम में डालती है.....साथ ही विश्व को यह संदेश भी देती है कि वहां हालत और खराब हो रहे हैं.....(और) अभी और काम किए जाने की जरूरत है.

बेस्ले ने पिछले महीने के पुरस्कार के बारे में कहा, यह बहुत सही वक्त पर मिला है. उन्होंने कहा कि अमेरिकी चुनाव और कोविड-19 महामारी की खबरों की वजह से इसे ज्यादा तवज्जो नहीं मिली, साथ ही दुनिया भर का ध्यान उस परेशानी की ओर नहीं गया जिसका हम सामना करते हैं. उन्होंने सुरक्षा परिषद में अप्रैल माह में कही उस बात को याद किया कि विश्व एक ओर तो महामारी से जूझ रहा है और यह भुखमरी के महामारी जैसे हालात के मुहाने पर भी खड़ा है और अगर तत्काल कार्रवाई नहीं की गई तो हालात खराब हो सकते हैं.
